Center for the Study of Relations between Jews, Christians, Muslims

Religions have been and remain a central feature in the history of civilization. With the demise of the post World War II struggle between the Western and Communist blocs, and the weakening of the secular dimension of modern national movements, interreligious relations have gained renewed significance, assuming a major role in the design of contemporary history in the making.

Relations between Christians and Muslims, between Christians and Jews, and between Jewish and Muslims are major axes in the history of almost every parts of our world. Interreligious conflicts juxtaposed with productive interreligious dialogue are evident wherever one turns in the global village. The centrality of interreligious interaction in the contemporary world has aroused new interest in the historic and social roots of these relations. Scholarly research is reexamining this field and inquiring into the societal role of religious faith. The study of religions considers the function of religion in the design of the systems of societies – past and present. This relates to the evolvement of state institutions, as well as the design of systems of inclusion, seclusion and control, and the tension between personal and public religion.

Goals and fields of research

The Center for the Study of Relations between Jews, Christians, Muslims (JCMC) at the OUI is the first of its kind in Israel. There are research centers for the study of a particular religion and of the Jewish Diaspora. However, JCMC intends to serve an unmet scholarly and public mission: It will fulfill the purpose of encouraging scholarly research of the historical development and current status of interreligious and intercultural relations and will add a contribution to the studied societies.

The Center provides an environment for research groups which cooperate in the study of selected topics in the field. It promotes interdisciplinary and interdepartmental research on the social, cultural and religious discourse between Jews, Christians and Muslims from antiquity to the present.

In addition, JCMC will initiate joint academic ventures with researchers at other universities and prestigious research institutes in Israel and throughout the world. So far, cooperation is anticipated with The Levtzion Center for Islamic Studies, The Hebrew University in Jerusalem, and the Woolf Institute of Abrahamic Faiths in Cambridge, UK.
