The Dictionary of Seventeenth and Eighteenth Century Dutch Philosophers is at once an overview of Dutch philosophical development and a synoptic presentation of early modern European thought at large. Furthermore, this Dictionary contains material on many figures who were not in a strict sense philosophers but who contributed otherwise to the dissemination of philosophical ideas, such as publishers and journalists.

Apart from entries on persons, this dictionary is unique in that it includes material on universities, illustrious schools and learned magazines. The relatively late appearance of philosophical and scientific societies in the Netherlands (after 1750) may well have been due to the success and international status of the Dutch universities. It is for obvious importance throughout the period dealt with that we have chosen to include separate entries on the five Dutch universities and a number of important municipal academies (the so-called 'illustrious schools').

We are confident that the Dictionary of Seventeenth and Eighteenth Century Dutch Philosophers will provide a valuable work of reference for both specialists and general readers. Finally, we hope that it will be a source of inspiration for many future of Dutch and European intellectual history.
