"… A major contribution to understanding the management and settlement of ethnic conflicts. As a first comprehensive analysis this book is a veritable vademecum, which should be required reading not only for students and teachers… but for all those involved in managing and settling ethnic conflicts, particularly those in international organizations and the diplomatic service"

(Anthony Alcock, University of Ulster)

Ethnic conflicts devastate the lives of millions of people, destabilize governments and undermine the prospects of sustainable development and successful transitions to democracy. Moreover, the threats to global peace and stability that these conflicts pose often prompt the international community to engage in difficult and controversial peace-making and peace-keeping operations, with uncertain costs and outcomes. The contributors discuss the causes and consequences of ethnic conflict, and examine the successes and failures of conflict management in Europe, Asia and Africa.
