Generative artificial intelligence tools have significantly reduced the cost and production barriers associated with podcasts, shifting the challenges of integrating them into higher education from logistical considerations to pedagogical ones, where there is a growing need to examine their educational effectiveness and their impact on students' learning experiences. Nevertheless, the use of podcasts in higher education remains limited and requires an up-to-date qualitative mapping of students' experiences. Accordingly, this exploratory study examined students' perceptions of podcasts as a learning tool. The study was based on 13 semi-structured in-depth interviews with students from various academic institutions, and the data were analyzed using qualitative thematic analysis. The findings show that students often listen to podcasts alongside daily activities, highlighting advantages such as flexibility, accessibility, control over the pace of learning, and increased self-confidence. However, they also noted limitations in achieving deep learning, particularly in technical or complex subjects that require visual representations and emphasized that podcasts do not replace instructional interaction. The students underscore the pedagogical duality between ease of use and cognitive limitations and suggest models of active learning in which they create their own podcasts, combining emotional benefits with active knowledge processing. Future research should examine, in larger and more diverse populations, the impact of different content types, alignment with varied learning styles, and long-term effects.
