הקורס מציע התבוננות מעמיקה במפעל התרגום מערבית לעברית בעת המודרנית תוך בחינת ההקשרים האידיאולוגיים שהניעו אותו והסוגיות המרכזיות עימן התמודד. מטרותיו העיקריות:
• להסביר את מעמדה של השפה הערבית בישראל ואת הגישות השונות בחקר התרגום מערבית לעברית.
• להציג הבדלים עיקריים בין השפה הערבית לשפה העברית, בעיות בתרגום מערבית לעברית ודרכים לפתרונן.
• לעמוד על הקשרים בין פוליטיקה ותרגום בהקשר של התרגום מערבית לעברית.
• לנתח יצירות ספרות מתורגמות לאור גישות שונות לתרגום מערבית לעברית.

לקורס נלוות מקראה וחוברת יצירות. בראשונה יש מאמרים עדכניים העוסקים בתרגום בכלל ובתרגום מערבית לעברית בפרט ובשנייה יש מבחר יצירות ערביות בתרגומן לעברית.
לקורס נלווה גם מדריך למידה הכולל קריאה צמודה במאמרי הקורס.
* בקורס זה אין צורך בידיעת השפה הערבית. הקורס מתבסס על התרגומים לעברית.

6 Credits at Advanced Level with the option of writing a Seminar Paper
Successful completion of all required components of the Seminar Paper will count as 6 credits. These credits can be counted as prerequisite credits to enroll in other courses.
Affiliation: Humanities / Literature / Hebrew literature.
Prerequisite for enrolment: 36 credits from previous courses, including at least one course of Literature, Language, Cinema, History, Sociology or Journalism, and one additional course in the Humanities, Social Sciences or Journalism, as well as compliance with the English requirements and the bibliographic training requirements offered by the library.

The course offers an in-depth exploration of the enterprise of translation from Arabic to Hebrew in the modern period while examining the ideological context and central questions that characterize such an undertaking. The main goals of the course are:
• To inquire into the status of the Arabic language in Israeli culture and society and examine different approaches to the study of translation from Arabic to Hebrew;
• To examine significant differences between Arabic and Hebrew language and thereby understand problems faced in translation from Arabic to Hebrew and methods for addressing such problems;
• To analyze the connection between politics and translation in the context of translating from Arabic to Hebrew.
• To analyze works of literature translated from Arabic to Hebrew in light of different approaches toward translation examined in the course.

Students will be provided with a Course Reader and a Study Guide. The Course Reader includes recent academic studies focusing on translation in general and translation from Arabic to Hebrew in particular, as well as selection of Arabic works in Hebrew translation. The Study Guide is designed to help students engage in close readings of the articles in the Course Reader.
Knowledge of Arabic is not a prerequisite for participation. The course is based on Hebrew translations of Arabic works.
