Transition to Acquisition
Fri, Nov 26, 1999; by Jeff Shelton.

Without question, the primary reason I have for wanting to learn Zope is to make use of inheritance, which results from Python's object-oriented nature. And by using External Methods or Python Methods, I can do just that. But when using the Folder Objects, DTML Methods, and DTML Documents that are part of Zope, I must rely on a different methodology -- acquisition.

Acquisition is not intuitive. It takes a while to learn. But it is an effective tool and can be put to good use once its basic concepts are understood. One of the difficulties in comprehending acquistion is that notation used for mapping acquisition runs counter to its use elsewhere. This article will discuss the role of notation in understanding acquisition, as well as how acquisition works. And since this website is for zopeNewbies, I'm going to start at the very beginning, explaining some basic concepts of object-oriented programming, in Object-Oriented Terminology.
