Walking in Their Footsteps in Ashdod

Striving for excellence receives practical backing in Ashdod, where the local municipality and the Open University are working to ensure that the city’s gifted high school students can go as far as possible. Gal and Yvgeni have already proven their mettle and now they’re helping other high school/university students.

In cities throughout Israel, there are high school students in the Open University programs. But in Ashdod, these students take it one step further. Two high school graduates, who completed their undergraduate degrees alongside high school studies, and are beginning their army service, are encouraging fellow high school students at the Open University.

Gal Lalouche and Yvgeni Sanchiko act and look like any other high school student. And, they are. Almost A few months ago they finished their high school matriculation exams, and shortly will be completing their undergraduate degrees at the Open University – Lalouche in computer sciences and Sanchiko in management and economics. The IDF deferred their service so that they could complete their degrees, and join the IDF as university graduates.

Since they can only seem to do things concomitantly – like high school and university studies – they are also helping other high school students as they take their first steps at the Open University. All of this is happening in Ashdod, a city that encourages excellence among its student body. The municipal education department is not only encouraging students to enroll in academic studies, but is also providing scholarship moneys to enable it.

High school students who combine university studies are not a rare phenomenon in Israel, but in Ashdod, it appears, they are receiving far greater support and help than just about anywhere else. Interest level is exceedingly high. Last year, no less than 156 students from Ashdod were studying at Open University.
