Dr. Yohanan S. Ouaknine is a Research Fellow at the Digital Humanities and Social Sciences (DHSS) Hub at the Open University of Israel. He is the founder of Yahasra.org, a data-for-good initiative dedicated to documenting Jewish cemeteries in Morocco. His research focuses on computational Sephardic onomastics, with particular emphasis on applying phonetic normalization algorithms to multilingual historical records. By bridging digital preservation and community genealogy, his work leverages data science to reconstruct the demographic and geographic history of Moroccan Jewry. His current fellowship project maps the geographic "rootedness" of Sephardic lineages through quantitative analysis of vanishing cemetery inscriptions.
Dr. Ouaknine holds a Ph.D. in Information Science from Bar-Ilan University. He retired as Head of the Research Branch at the Israel Prison Service and now serves as a consultant to government agencies, as well as a lecturer at Ariel University and Ashkelon Academic College.
